Central to the person centered approach is group therapy, also called an encounter group. Encounter groups, there are no “leaders”, few rules and no predetermined agenda. The ‘therapists’ act as facilitators, however ideally, each member of the group will grow to act as a facilitator. Overtime, an outsider would not be really able to distinguish who the “therapist” is.

In general the encounter group assists the participants to come in touch with themselves, their deeper feelings and learn to express them effectually, so with improving the relation with self and others.

For the group the function at its best the facilitators strive to create and secure an atmosphere of acceptance, trust and confidentiality, where each member is free to express him/herself authentically.
